How to make the most out of the LGPS

If you have just joined, this area explains the benefits of nominating a beneficiary, the advantages of telling us about any previous LGPS membership, how you can top up your benefits and how we keep you up to date with your pension.

Tell us who you would like to receive any lump sum payable on your death

shoreline evening By making a nomination on SPFOnline or supplying us with a nomination form, you will be telling us who you would like us to pay any lump sum death benefit to.

Please note that it is your responsibility to tell us if you change your mind over who you want to receive this.

Tell us about previous LGPS membership

glasgow roofs If you rejoin the LGPS, you should contact us immediately.

If you do not provide us with any instructions, there are rules that we or your previous pension fund have to apply.

This may not be to your advantage.


You may also be able to transfer in pension rights from another public sector scheme, but you must ask within 12 months of joining.

Consider topping up your benefits

Burns note You can buy more LGPS pension by paying Additional Pension Contributions (APCs).

You can also make Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs) to our in-house AVC scheme administered by Prudential. Full details are available on their website. or by calling the Prudential on 0800 032 6674.

Keep track of how your pension is building up

SPFOnline has a benefit projector that you can use to see whether you might have enough income in retirement.

Our Benefit Calculator can also be used to estimate your total benefits from LGPS 1998, LGPS 2009 and LGPS 2015.
